Description

10 month contract with possibility of extension dependent on additional funding

Herbie, is a local greengrocer project run by the sustainable development charity MERCi. We have been working in partnership with a range of organisations, such as Zest and the Manchester City Council Joint Health Unit, to develop programmes to improve public access to and increase public consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables. We have been operating Herbie for the last three years and we have now received increased funding through the Joint Health Unit and the Big Lottery Fund to further develop this service.

We operate two vehicles and both vehicles stop at a number of sites throughout East and North Manchester. The Project Workers, as well as driving the vans, will also work closely with the Herbie Development Worker, local health workers and volunteers to help promote the advantages of healthy eating within the local community. The Herbie Project Workers also buy and collect the produce from the market, network with local providers, support local events, make and deliver fruit baskets and boxes, and offer advice and information to
customers on storing, cooking and gardening.

The team operates on a rota system so there will be opportunities for all the project workers to participate in the duties attached to this position. The post includes some weekend work and early starts as the workers will need to be at the market early in the morning when it is their turn to buy.

A clean driving licence is essential and some knowledge of the local area would be an advantage. Some previous experience in the selling of fruit and vegetables, cooking and gardening would be desirable, although full training will be provided.

Please complete the application form available on www.merci.org.uk or telephone Jemma on 0161 273 1736 and request an application form.

Please post this back to: Caroline Downey, Coordinator, MERCi, Bridge 5 Mill, 22a Beswick Street, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 7HR.
